This project was completed before Dharmik Australia was registered. At the time there were 164 children living in Central Kathmandu in very difficult conditions which made it hard to sleep at night. |
The children only had one sheet per bed, and so when it was wet or there were not enough staff to wash the sheets, they stayed on the beds, for weeks at a time (maybe months). We replaced the old sheets with two new sheets per bed. They needed new pillows and pillowcases. |
Some children had nowhere to store their few belongings. We manufactured bags locally boosting employment. The bag maker gave us a special price because it was charitable work and gave a 5 year guarantee on the zipper. |
The boys slept in horrific conditions under a very hot tin roof. It was sweltering in there. We tried to find insulation like we have in Australia but it did not exist, and so we built a thatched roof with a bamboo frame on top of the corrugated iron roof. This made the room much cooler and solved the problem with local materials at a quarter of our original estimate. We learn a great deal from this project. It bought tears to our eyes when we were presented with 'thank you' artwork made by the children. Like all children, they are wonderful, precious and innocent and they deserve a hopeful future.
